VoiceboxMD gives nurse practitioners two ways to finish the note: an ambient AI medical scribe that records the visit and drafts a SOAP or H&P note, and live dictation that types into any EHR field from the Mac or Windows app. Both are on every plan from $49 a month, with a Business Associate Agreement included. ICD-10 and CPT code suggestions start on the Power plan at $79.

Documentation Burden and What Ambient Scribes Have Shown

NPs carry the full documentation load of the visit: history, exam, assessment, plan, orders and billing. Two 2025 studies in JAMA Network Open measured what happened when clinicians, including advanced practice providers, started using ambient AI scribes:

  • Six health systems, 263 clinicians (29 of them advanced practice providers): burnout fell from 51.9% to 38.8% after 30 days of ambient scribe use (Olson KD et al., 2025).
  • Mass General Brigham, part of a 1,430-clinician study (survey study) at two academic health systems: burnout fell from 50.6% to 29.4% after 42 days (You JG et al., 2025).

These are results from other organizations' ambient scribe programs, not measurements of VoiceboxMD. Full citations are in the sources section below. For how ambient scribes work across the category, see ambient clinical documentation and AI charting software.

Two Ways to Document, One Plan

Ambient AI scribe

Start recording when the visit starts, on your computer, phone or in the browser. When you stop, VoiceboxMD drafts a structured note for you to review.

  • SOAP and H&P built in, plus up to 50 of your own templates
  • Works on Mac, Windows, iPhone, Android and the web app
  • A visit recorded on the phone appears on the desktop, ready to place
  • The desktop app places the whole note, or one section at a time, into the EHR field you are in
  • Included on every plan, from $49 a month

Live dictation

Speak and the desktop app types your words at the cursor, in any EHR that accepts typed text.

  • Medical speech recognition with your own custom vocabulary
  • Macros and dictation templates for normal exams and standard plans
  • The phone can act as a wireless microphone for the desktop
  • Philips SpeechMike record button works as push-to-talk
  • Included on every plan, from $49 a month

Built for NP Specialties and Practice Settings

  • Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)

Multi-problem visits, well-child exams, chronic disease follow-ups and acute visits, each drafted as one structured note per encounter.

  • Psychiatric Mental Health NP (PMHNP)

Medication management and psychiatric evaluations. SOAP is built in; a DAP or BIRP layout can be set up once as a custom template. See also the AI scribe for therapists.

  • Adult-Gerontology Primary Care NP (AGPCNP)

Polypharmacy, annual wellness visits and chronic care follow-ups. Patient continuity shows what you dictated at the last visit when you pick the patient before recording.

  • Acute Care NP (AGACNP and Hospitalist)

Progress notes and H&Ps between rounds. Record or dictate on the phone; the note is waiting on the desktop when you reach a workstation.

  • Pediatric NP (PNP)

Well-child visits, anticipatory guidance and developmental screening. The app does not label who is speaking, so check what is attributed to the parent and the child before you sign.

  • Women's Health NP (WHNP) and CNM

Annual exams, prenatal and postpartum visits, contraceptive counseling. Choose the OB/GYN specialty setting for its starter vocabulary, and build your own prenatal template.

  • Emergency and Urgent Care NP (ENP)

Short, fast visits. Record the encounter or dictate straight into the chart between rooms.

  • Specialty NPs

Cardiology, endocrinology, dermatology and more. Add the drug names, devices and procedures you use to your custom vocabulary so they are recognized.

Works With the EHR You Already Use

VoiceboxMD does not connect to your EHR or read what is in it. The desktop app puts text where your cursor is, so it works in Epic, Cerner / Oracle Health, athenahealth, eClinicalWorks, Practice Fusion, NextGen, AdvancedMD, Kareo / Tebra, DrChrono, MEDITECH and other EHRs, with no IT project. On the phone and web app, you copy the note instead. VoiceboxMD never signs or files a note for you.

Billing Support: ICD-10 and CPT Code Suggestions

On the Power and Premium plans, VoiceboxMD suggests ICD-10 and CPT codes from the finished note. Each suggestion comes with a confidence score and the text in the note that supports it, so you can check it before you bill. Power also adds a superbill in the web app, referral and prior-auth letters, an after-visit summary and an orders checklist.

VoiceboxMD has no E/M leveling feature (an office-visit code can appear among the CPT suggestions, but it is not calculated from medical decision making or time), and it gives no incident-to or split/shared billing guidance. Coding and the signed note stay your professional responsibility.

Common Questions from Nurse Practitioners

How much does an AI scribe cost for a nurse practitioner?

VoiceboxMD is $49 a month on Essential, which includes the ambient AI scribe and live dictation. Power is $79 and adds ICD-10 and CPT code suggestions, a superbill and letters. Premium is $99 and adds a writing style learned from your edits. Billed monthly or annually; cancel a monthly plan any time.

Is VoiceboxMD HIPAA compliant for nurse practitioner documentation?

A Business Associate Agreement is included on every plan at no extra cost. Recorded audio is deleted automatically 7 days after it is recorded, with each deletion logged, and no patient information is sent to website or app analytics.

Can I use the AI scribe for telehealth visits?

VoiceboxMD records the device microphone only. It does not capture audio from Zoom, Doxy.me or other video-call software, so a video visit is only recorded if your microphone can hear both sides; check your privacy obligations and test this before relying on it.

What is the difference between ambient mode and dictation for NPs?

Ambient mode records the whole visit and drafts a structured note for you to review. Dictation types exactly what you say into the EHR field you are in. Both are on every plan, so you can choose per visit.

Does VoiceboxMD work for psychiatric nurse practitioners (PMHNPs)?

Yes. SOAP is built in, and a DAP or BIRP layout can be set up once as a custom template with its own sections and AI instructions. On Power and Premium, ICD-10 and CPT code suggestions come with the text that supports each one.

Will VoiceboxMD work with my EHR?

Yes, if your EHR accepts typed text. The desktop app places text at your cursor in Epic, Cerner, athenahealth, eClinicalWorks, Practice Fusion, NextGen, AdvancedMD, Kareo, DrChrono, MEDITECH and others. It does not connect to the EHR or read your charts, so there is no IT setup.

Does VoiceboxMD suggest an E/M level?

It has no E/M leveling feature. On Power and Premium it suggests ICD-10 and CPT codes, each with the supporting text from the note. An office-visit code can appear among those suggestions, but it is not calculated from medical decision making or time. Choosing the level of service, and any incident-to or split/shared billing, stays with you.

Can I use VoiceboxMD on my iPhone between exam rooms?

Yes. The iPhone and Android app records visits and dictates notes. A visit recorded on the phone appears on your desktop, ready to place in the EHR, and the phone can also act as a wireless microphone for the desktop app.

Is VoiceboxMD a Dragon Medical alternative for NPs on a Mac?

Yes. VoiceboxMD runs natively on macOS 12 or later, Apple Silicon and Intel, as well as Windows. There is no voice profile to train, it starts at $49 a month billed monthly, and the AI scribe is included.

How is the free trial set up?

The trial is on the plan you choose: 7 days on monthly billing, 14 days on annual. A card is collected at sign-up but not charged until the trial ends, and you can cancel before then.
