There is no single best AI scribe. A solo family physician paying by card and a health system buying for 2,000 clinicians are choosing between different products. These are the criteria we used, in the order a small practice usually meets them.
What we did not do: we did not run the same patient visits through all 12 products, so this page does not score note accuracy. Published head-to-head evidence is limited; the largest randomized trial we found compared two products against usual care (see the FAQ on time saved).
Published price
A published price lets you budget and start without a sales call. Enterprise products usually quote per organization, often with an annual contract and an implementation project. We show the published price where one exists and say "not published" where it does not.
Ambient, dictation, or both
An ambient scribe records the visit and drafts the note. Dictation types what you say. Some visits suit one, some the other. See ambient scribe or dictation: which mode, when.
How the note reaches the EHR
The options are copy and paste, typing at your cursor in any program, or a built-in integration with a specific EHR such as Epic. An integration can write straight into the chart but usually needs your EHR team. Typing at the cursor works in any field but does not read the chart.
BAA terms
Under HIPAA, a vendor that handles patient information for you must sign a Business Associate Agreement. We note where a vendor's pricing page says a BAA is included, and on which plans. Ask every vendor directly before you record a patient.
Who it is built for

Abridge describes itself as trusted by "leading enterprise healthcare systems" and lists "300+ health systems" on its homepage. It is bought by organizations, not by individual clinicians.

3. Microsoft Dragon Copilot: for organizations buying through Microsoft
Price: per-user price not published. The product page says "Contact us". Microsoft's licensing guidance lists a pay-as-you-go rate of 25 consumption units at $0.01 each, which is $0.25 per AI-assisted session, as of May 4, 2026.
Dragon Copilot is Microsoft's clinical assistant for "physicians, nurses, radiologists, and other healthcare professionals", available "via web browser, mobile app, desktop application, and embedded within supported EHRs such as Epic". Its licensing guidance lists a Flex license that includes dictation.

4. Freed: self-serve ambient scribe with a low entry price
Price: Starter $39/mo (up to 40 notes a month), Core $79/mo (unlimited notes), Premier $119/mo or $104/mo billed annually, Groups custom. 7-day free trial.
Freed is sold by card to individual clinicians, with a custom Groups plan. Its pricing page lists "Dictation and saved phrases" on Premier and an "Organization-wide BAA" on Groups.

5. Heidi Health: free plan and paid clinician seats

Heidi offers a free plan with a weekly allowance and paid seats. Its pricing page lists dictation, including "Dictate anywhere on your screen" in its desktop app. We did not find a BAA mentioned on the pricing page; ask Heidi which plans include one.
