Most dictation tools assume your records live in somebody else’s cloud and plug into it. Open Dental does not work that way: the program runs on your workstations and the database is on your server, which is exactly why many practices choose it.
VoiceboxMD fits that model without asking you to change it. It types where your cursor is, so Open Dental receives ordinary keystrokes and your data never leaves your database because of us. There is nothing to install on the server, nothing to open on the firewall, and nothing to redo after an Open Dental update.

Install on the workstation
Download VoiceboxMD for Windows and install it on the operatory or front-desk computer, the same one running Open Dental. Nothing goes on your server.
Open the chart as usual
Open Dental opens the way it always does. Click into the clinical note, the procedure note, or any other box you would type in.
Speak, and check the note
The words appear as you talk. When you stop, the note is in Open Dental, saved on your own server as always.
Try it on one operatory computer. Install it, chart one exam by voice, and see whether the notes read the way you want them to.

Does VoiceboxMD work with Open Dental?
Yes, on Windows. Open Dental is an installed application rather than a website, and VoiceboxMD types into it the same way your keyboard does, at the operating-system level. Clinical notes, procedure notes and any other text box all accept dictation.
Does anything need to change on our server?
No. VoiceboxMD never talks to Open Dental or to your database. It runs on the workstation and types where your cursor is, so your server, your MySQL database and your backups are untouched.
Does it know dental terminology?
Yes. Tooth numbering and surfaces, restorative materials, anesthetics, CDT codes and periodontal vocabulary are all covered, and you can add the terms your practice uses in a minute. A dental practice that selects its specialty also gets a starter word list seeded automatically.
Can we chart perio by voice?
Yes. There is a dedicated perio mode for reading measurements aloud as you probe, which is the part of the exam where a second pair of hands usually goes to the keyboard.
We run several operatories. How does licensing work?
Licensing is per provider, not per computer, and a provider can sign in on more than one machine. Add or remove providers yourself from your account page, with no minimum and no annual contract.
Is our patient data safe?
A signed BAA is included on every plan at no extra cost. Audio is encrypted, deleted within 24 hours of being processed, and never used to train AI models. Your clinical records stay where they already are, in your own Open Dental database.
